Sport Climbing

Sports Climbing is a sport competing in World Games and in 2020 will feature at the Tokyo Olympics. It is a sport where climbers attempt to climb on artificial walls in three Disciplines, mainly Lead, Bouldering and Speed.

If one compares Sport Climbing to canoeing as a sport, then Lead is your long-distance races such as the Duzi or Umkomaas Marathons, combining technical ability with endurance. Bouldering is your White Water/Slalom style paddling where power and technique combine and Speedis your sprint flat water canoe races.

  1.         I.            LEAD

Height, endurance and strategy. Athletes climb rope-tied, moving one hold at a time, clipping into a drawer whilst “unprotected” from a fall, on an overhanging route of anything up to 30m with a maximum 8-minute time limit. The athlete who climbs the highest, wins.

  1.       II.            BOULDER

Power and technique for an explosive performance of a maximum of 10 movements. Spectacular and intense gestures, maximum height 4 meters and a fall back onto mats.

  1.     III.            SPEED

15 meters up in less than 6 seconds! Rope-tied (top rope) from above, climbers run/climb fast on parallel walls. The fastest wins!

International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC)

The IFSC is a member of ARISF, SportAccord and IWGA and is officially recognized by the IOC. Itis an international non-governmental non-profit organization whose main objectives is the direction, regulation, promotion, development and furtherance of climbing competitions around the world.

The IFSC fosters links, networks, and friendly relations among its members, their climbers and officials.

The IFSC has committed itself to undertaking the following goals:

     I.            to encourage, promote, develop and supervise climbing competitions worldwide;

    II.            to promote the spirit of the Olympic Movement, respect the Olympic Charter, and to seek program status in the Olympic Games;

    III.            to fight against doping and all other processes and procedures that might undermine sporting equality;

    IV.            to implement Anti-doping Rules in accordance with the World Anti- doping Code;

     V.            to promote good sporting practice;

   VI.            to generally promote this sport as a healthy and educational activity for youth;

  VII.            to establish and maintain rules and standards for competition climbing;

 VIII.            to establish and maintain rules for international climbing competitions and for the participation in such competitions;

   IX.            to monitor and enforce the application of those rules by the Continental Councils and the member federations

    X.            to organize World Climbing Championships, World and Continental Cups, as well as other competitions which are approved by the IFSC Plenary                        Assembly, and to decide which international climbing competitions are officially recognized;

   XI.            to award licenses and contracts to IFSC members and other organizations that seek authority to organize official international climbing                                          competitions and associated activities;

  XII.            to establish training courses for all IFSC officials in order to guarantee the highest possible standards for all IFSC officials

X11.           to consider the protection of the environment when organizing and promoting its activities.

 The last two decades have been a period of spectacular growth for both sport climbing and the organization. Sport climbing has gained credibility not only as competitive sport, but also for its social values. The IFSC is a young and healthy Federation founded on modern sporting principles and values, cultivating them along with sport growth and development.

The IFSC has spent its first years building a dynamic but solid structure, based on:

        I.            principles of good governance, universality, equal opportunities, transparency;

       II.            spectacular events ruled by highest standard of rules;

      III.            athletes inclusion in the IF decision-making processes at all levels;

      IV.            anti-doping policies and athletes health and integrity protection.
